“Connection” will be an outdoor installation. My goal for “Connection” is to provide a means for Seattle residents and visitors to engage with global issues through a tangible artistic interface.
Ideally suited to a plaza location and in place for a minimum of three months, the proposed work will be an interactive sculptural environment composed of seven 8’ to 10’ tall abstract metal forms that simultaneously suggest human- and tree-like figures. Arranged within a circle about 20’ in diameter, each form will represent one of the seven continents, be a vivid unique color, and be connected to the forms on either side of it. Those connection points will be solar-powered discs that illuminate the peripheral environment and pulsate with variable rhythms. The seven figures themselves may or may not move, depending on how the project evolves, available funding, and site-specific logistics.
In addition to being a space that visitors will be able enter and move through, as if joining their dance, each form will feature a prominently displayed QR code. When visitors click on these codes, they’ll launch brief, dynamic videos that illustrate not only the current and anticipated challenges specific to each continent but surveys of the solutions currently in progress and being explored.
The work plan is entirely feasible, as Connection will draw upon my extensive experience designing and implementing large-scale art installations that incorporate technological features.
